The driver who killed Malaysian actor Shaun Chen’s father in a hit-and-run has turned himself in, according to Malaysian police.
The Jelebu police said in a statement that a 62-year-old man had turned himself in on March 28, the day of the accident. A urine test was conducted on the man and the result was negative. The notice did not state which substances were being tested for.
The police added that the man was the driver of a vehicle that was involved in a fatal road accident with the driver of a motorcycle – Chen’s 84-year-old father, who died while receiving treatment at Jelebu Hospital on March 28.
Chen, who stars in the ongoing Mediacorp drama Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story, posted a video of the crash on Instagram on March 28. In it, a car can be seen speeding away after knocking over a man on a motorcycle, leaving him lying motionless on the ground.
In a short clip, he called for the perpetrator to come forward and apologise to his father.
The 46-year-old Johor Baru-based actor is now back in his home town of Negeri Sembilan. He told Malaysian media 8TV at the wake: “The police say the perpetrator has surrendered and has been arrested. But as for what the situation will be like in the future, I have no idea. I also don’t know what he will be charged with and how he will be punished. I will speak to the police after settling my father’s affairs.”
Chen, who was on vacation with his family in Bangkok when his father died, called for an upgrade of medical facilities in parts of Malaysia so that people can receive timely help.
“He laid there on the ground for half an hour before the ambulance came. By the time he got to the hospital, it had been over an hour from when the crash occurred, and he likely missed the critical period to receive treatment just like that,” he claimed.
