How to keep your cat's food bowl clean and germ-free

Proper food and water hygiene is essential for cats, as improper storage or dirty bowls can lead to germ growth, spoiled food, and an increased risk of illness.

The German Pet Supplies Industry Association (IVH) offers these tips to keep cats safe:

Clean the bowl promptly

Germs multiply quickly, especially in wet food, raw meat, or fish. In warm conditions, check bowls within 30 minutes of feeding and remove any leftovers.

Rinse bowls after every meal and wash thoroughly at least once a day with hot water and a small amount of dish soap.

Feed small portions

Serving smaller meals throughout the day reduces leftovers and lowers the risk of germs.

Frequent small portions are also easier on your cat's digestion.

Change the water

Cats may drink little, but fresh water is essential. Replace it at least twice a day and wipe the bowl clean.

Keep the feeding area clean

Bowls aren't the only concern – wipe down the feeding area regularly to prevent bacteria build-up.

Store food correctly

Opened wet food should be refrigerated and served at room temperature to avoid digestive issues.

Dry food should be kept in an airtight container, away from sunlight, heat and humidity, to maintain freshness, taste, and texture. – dpa
