Treading on dangerous ground

(From left) Elected representatives Lydia Ong Kok Fooi (DAP-Berapit), Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bungah), Dr T. Jayabalan (PKR-Batu Uban), Cheah Kah Peng (PKR-Kebun Bunga), Lee Khai Loon (PKR-Machang Bubok) and Dr Norela Ariffin (PKR-Penanti) having a discussion during break time at the state assembly.

A WAR of words between assemblymen from both sides of the political divide almost resulted in them being ejected from the state assemblysitting.

It started off with R.S.N Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) asking state Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Develop-ment Committee chairman Chong Eng (DAP-Padang Lalang) if there was any request by Barisan Nasional assemblymen to take part in the Penang Women’s Brigade.

“Are there any complaints that women who wanted to join the Penang Women’s Brigade but were ‘advised’ not to do so?” Rayer posed a supplementary question to Chong Eng during the oral question session yesterday.

Chong Eng said there was no request by BN assemblymen to take part so far.

Earlier, Muhamad Yusoff Mohd Noor (BN-Sungai Dua) said that Penang Women’s Brigade was not active in Sungai Dua.

Chong Eng claimed that there was a woman who was threatened by a ‘certain party’ not to join the brigade.

“I am not mentioning names,” she said.

Her reply drew a warof words between BN and Pakatan Harapan assemblymen.

Rayer said: “Selalu hasut. BN selalu hasut. (Always provoke. BN always provoke)

Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang (PKR-Bukit Tambun) had to step in and maintain order in the House.

“Sit or all of you will be asked to leave,” he said.

Opposition Leader Datuk Jahara Hamid (BN-Teluk Air Tawar) was heard as saying to Rayer: “Tarik balik!”

Rayer then repeated it again: “BN selalu hasut!” (BN always provoke)

“You said it first,” countered Jahara.

Law then interrupted, asking Chong to finishher sentence.

Chong said: “Yes, let mefinish.

“The woman was threatened that if she disobeyed, she will not receive aid from that ‘party’.”

Muhamad Yusoff denied the allegation.

Chong then replied: “Don’t be so sensitive. I just said a certain party,” she added.

Rayer remarked: “Ni selalu BN.”

Law then said: “Sudah, sudah.”

Rayer replied: “Datuk Speaker marah. Cool down Datuk Speaker, cool down.”
