FOOD can tell the story of a region, reflecting its culture and heritage as well as the people who shape its flavours.

Ramadan — a time of reflection and community — is also a season where meals take on greater significance, bringing families and friends together after a day of fasting.

At Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur, this year’s “Santapan Nusantara” buffet presents a variety of dishes inspired by Malay, Indonesian and regional specialities.

The buffet features an extensive selection of kerabu (salad), including Winged Bean with Toasted Coconut Kerabu, Torch Ginger Flower and Salted Egg Kerabu as well as one with young papayas.

From the “ulam-ulaman” (traditional salad) side, guests can choose from an assortment of vegetables including long beans, okra, four-angled beans and other leafy greens.

Catering to those who enjoy traditional Malay accompaniments, these are served alongside spicy dips like sambal belacan, budu (fermented anchovy sauce), sambal tempoyak cili with a spice-and-durian base, and sambal ijo made with green chillies.

A highlight is the “kuali- kawah” stalls, where hearty dishes such as Kambing Bakar (roast lamb), Gulai Daging Kawah (beef stew) and Asam Pedas Ekor Lembu (spicy sour oxtail stew) are prepared in large traditional woks.

At the soup station, options include Sup Tulang that is beef bones simmered with spices and root vegetables, and Sup Bakso Khas Jakarta, a rich Indonesian-style beef meatball soup.

The satay section offers an assortment of skewers, where aide from Malaysian-style, there are Indonesia’s Maranggi Beef Satay from Sunda, Madura Lamb Satay and Sate Padang Babat.

The Nusantara grill section showcases more selections from the Indonesian archipelago, including Daging Sapi Taliwang (traditional grilled beef), Ikan Nila Sambal Matah (Nile fish with Balinese-style sambal) and Tongseng Kambing (lamb stew).
