TOO often, we get caught up with work and mundane matters that we forget to show appreciation for the people and the little things that bring joy to our lives.

In conjunction with World Gratitude Day on Sept 21, Penang-based early childhood education centre The Whyte House will be spreading the message of gratitude and appreciation through a record-breaking feat — the “Largest Simultaneous Colouring Event” — which will go into the Malaysia Book of Records.

The event, to be held on Oct 4 in various locations nationwide, aims to get 16,000 participants from all walks of life.

It is organised in collaboration with the National Association of Early Childhood Care and Education Malaysia (Naeccem), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong).

The Whyte House executive director Jery Yeoh said they aimed to raise RM60,000 for charitable causes, such as End Polio Now, Kiwanis and Unicef.

Some of the funds will also be channelled to the Penang International Kids Storytelling Festival.

Yeoh said it was a good opportunity for parents to bond with their children, adding that it would be a memorable experience.

“As it is open to everyone, we are hoping to see people of all races and religions coming together for this event,” he said.

Naeccem president Datin Radziah M. Daud said, “Any values that you instil needs to start with children.

“This event not only spreads the message of being grateful for what we have, but also to give to charity,” said Radziah.

Registration is RM25 for children and senior citizens aged 55 and above, while the fee for adults is RM45. Participants will receive a door gift.

The locations are at Penang Times Square (main event), Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Negeri Perak in Ipoh, SJK(C) San Min No 1 in Teluk Intan, SSTwo Mall in Petaling Jaya, Giant Hypermarket Muar in Johor, Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh and Jaya 99 Convention Hall in Malacca.

The World Gratitude Day movement was started in 1977 by the United Nations Meditation group to celebrate one’s passions, family and friends, as well as the little things that bring joy into our everyday existence.
